This is a list of the most popular training programs offered by Missouri Enterprise.  However, our 35 years of providing both training and hands-on implementation projects for Missouri manufacturers has given us the experience and expertise to design customized training assistance in almost every area of manufacturing production.  Therefore, this list does not fully represent our training capabilities, which can be specifically designed for individual client needs. 1. Continuous Improvement Transformation Series - Instilling a Culture of Continuous Improvement

This is a four-part series that helps manufacturers transform their companies by implementing a culture of Lean from top to bottom.  Companies may choose to conduct one course each month for four consecutive months or a schedule of their choice.  Each topic may, also, be taught simply as an individual, stand-alone workshop rather than being included in a series.

2. Value Stream Mapping, 5S and MDI

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) considers all areas of the business involved in delivering product to the customer (i.e. quote to cash).  It is common for leadership to agree on strategic goals, but not be aligned on the actions to achieve them.  The VSM process gains that alignment. 

5S is considered a fundamental element of Lean Manufacturing/Continuous Improvement.  It can be easy to understand and relatively easy to implement.  The basic philosophy of 5S is often overlooked.  We’ll investigate how the 5S’s (sort, set-in-order, shine, standardize, and sustain) can be fully understood and drive improvement in all business areas. 

Manage for Daily Improvement (MDI) concepts assist in creating a culture of Continuous Improvement.  The MDI process engages all employees in establishing team goals, daily expectations, and solve team problems. 

3. Lean 101 with Simulation

This is simply the best and most effective way to quickly introduce people to true lean manufacturing processes and disciplines.  During this one-day workshop, participants are introduced to the “Eight Wastes” that are common in manufacturing operations.  Most participants relate these “wastes” to places in their operations that might offer areas for improvement and immediate ROI.  Even if you are already using Lean processes, this is a great refresher as well as a great introduction for new employees.     

The manufacturing simulation is what sets this workshop apart from others.  During the day, participants will assemble as many small electronic parts as possible in a simulated factory.  There are three production rounds of 20 minutes each.  In this learning-by-doing approach, participants progress from a first round that barely produces any parts in this amount of time using the most common production techniques to a third round that churns out a part every few seconds using the lean principles taught in the presentation.  This learning-by-doing approach is a great way to get more people in your operation to understand the basics of lean used to develop or enhance a continuous improvement culture.

4. Lean Leadership

Even the most robust process improvement cannot be sustained without the support of supervisors and managers.  Learning to be good leaders rather than good managers allows businesses to get the most out of their people and processes.  This session will help your supervisors walk away with a new sense of mission and understanding of what it takes to lead.  By improving efficiency, cross-training team members, reducing waste, and developing standards of work, you can do more with less.

Lean leadership is about understanding and applying concepts and principles of Lean thinking to all aspects of operations and will be reviewed in this presentation. According to Gallup Polls (as cited in Forbes Feb 22, 2017) 50% of employee’s indicated they left a position because of their manager.  If you are interested in retaining employee’s, creating a more engaged workforce, along with creating efficiencies in processes, then this is the seminar for you.

5. Lean Product Development

This course takes the concepts of “Lean” and applies them to the Product Development process.  Anyone involved in the creation of new products or redesign of existing products will benefit from this class.  The class discusses ways to improve the productivity of the process, thus creating higher profits per manhour of design, more projects completed, greater satisfaction of customers, and a more rewarding environment for the designers. 

Lean Product Development can help reduce Design Cycle times by 20% to 60% while giving the company a 10% to 50% increase in Gross Margins.  Companies that make and sell their own products rather than operating a “job shop” can increase their profit margins and create sustainable product lines, reducing the stress of always needing to sell the next job project.

6. Recruiting and Retaining Millennials

With more and more baby boomers reaching retirement age, employers throughout the nation are struggling with ways to appeal to the new generation of workers. Millennials, Generation Y, and iGen are very different. They want different things from their job – and in return, they offer a completely new set of skills to their employer.  This workshop provides insight into the emerging worker persona to help manufacturers prepare for this new generation and be positioned to better attract and retain them as team members.  This is a two-hour workshop with two parts.  Each part can be taught on the same day or two separate days.

7. An Introduction to Cobots and Strategic Automation with Robots

The hottest new technology in automation is the collaborative robot.  So, why are manufacturers everywhere flocking to his new product in a hurry?  This two-hour workshop discusses the origin of the technology, the different types and classifications of cobots in the market, and why they’re such an efficient and cost-effective workforce multiplier.  As vacant manufacturing positions nationwide reach an all-time high, cobots can help manufacturers solve some of the workforce shortages.

For any manufacturer, issues like material handling, quality assurance, and workforce dependability can be a burden.  Often, the best solution for these problems is to automate – but how does one even know where to start that process?  This section of the workshop examines how different manufacturers (who have faced these same obstacles) went through a process of identifying the problem and developing a solution.  Learn more about the role automation and robots play in Industry 4.0.  Live demonstrations will follow.

8. Cybersecurity Training, Scanning, and Planning for IT Staff

This four-hour workshop addresses needs specific to Network and Server Administrators (i.e. system configurations and vulnerabilities protection).  Following the workshop, Missouri Enterprise will conduct an electronic network scan to identify areas of concern that will require remediation, and will be addressed in a confidential, written report. 

Using both an assessment worksheet and the results of the network scan, Missouri Enterprise works with the client’s IT Department to develop an implementation/action plan that can be used to document cybersecurity enhancements to meet the security standards discussed below.

The standards companies should meet are outlined in a publication from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST Special Publication 800-171) and fall into 14 categories with specific requirements in each.  The categories that are explored thoroughly during the four-hour workshop are:

9. In-House Cybersecurity Training Workshop for General Staff

This one-hour workshop will enhance awareness of the need for cybersecurity and the primary steps everyone can take to make the business IT network as secure as possible.  These topics will include: Establishing a "Human Firewall,” Physical Security, Password Security, and Email Security Awareness Training.

10. Leadership for Continuous Improvement

Leadership for Continuous Improvement training enhances the necessary skills to lead in a Lean Enterprise culture.  The emphasis is directed toward developing tools to facilitate managing for daily improvement--including Leader Standard Work, Visual Management, Problem Solving, and Coaching.  Participants will be able to implement these techniques in their work area immediately.  This will further their ability to focus their team on continuous improvement.  This supports a culture shift of all employees in the organization, helping employees to becoming more aware and involved in results improvement.

Leadership for Continuous Improvement combines both classroom training and on-the-floor implementation coaching over a four-week period.  Each week involves training on Monday and coaching on Thursday, with 30, 60, and 90-day follow-up sessions of approximately one-half day each.  These follow-up sessions will occur during the trainees’ normal shift schedule.

The training and implementation are done in four, one-week modules as described above.  Participants will work on utilizing each element on the factory floor during the first day of training in each module, so they will be able to implement and start using the techniques immediately.  The four elements covered are:

  • Leader Standard Work – technique to add structure to the leader’s daily routine.  It enhances planning and organizational skills.  Planning includes activities to run the business and activities to improve the business.
  • Visual Management – by using visuals, especially a department visual board, the leader can further their team’s understanding of key daily results, continuous improvement opportunities, team information and the connection of their work to business strategic goals.
  • Problem Solving – leaders need to be effective problem solvers.  This part of the training enhances their skills and builds their team’s problem-solving ability.
  • Coaching – a leader must have good personal skills.  This builds upon their current skill set to foster their team’s problem solving and continuous improvement abilities.

11. Single Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED) Workshop

This is a two-day training and application event on the art and science of setup reduction using SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Dies) methodology.  It includes on-site leading implementation, with client’s team members on pre-selected work center which, includes video recording current setup activities, analysis, development of new setup method, and implementation of changes with time permitting.  The workshop concludes with development of the action plan to complete implementation of the new setup method.  Benefits of the SMED application include: shorter lead times, reduced WIP inventory, higher productivity, greater flexibility, and reduced setup cost. 

12. Six-Sigma Introduction Test Flight

The proposed one-day workshop is designed to introduce the principles of Six Sigma to a key group of client management and employees.   Six Sigma business strategies involve the use of the DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control) problem solving process to resolve problems that were previously considered unsolvable.  Successful Six Sigma projects generally result in actual savings in the realm of six to eight figures, depending on the size of the organization and the nature of the problem.

During the Six Sigma Test Flight Introduction, you’ll use Six Sigma tools and techniques like design of experiment and data analysis to:

  • reduce variation
  • align key business processes
  • drive sustainable improvements
  • achieve a significant ROI
  • gain a completive advantage; and
  • make decisions based on data not “best guesses.”

This engaging and interactive class combines classroom instruction with a series of hands-on, team exercises (using something as simple as paper airplanes) to help participants understand how each step in the Six Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analysis, Improve and Control) process works.  Class size is limited to a maximum of 20 participants.

13. TWI-Job Instruction

Training Within Industry (TWI) provides a framework for sustaining Continuous Improvement by leveraging the role of the supervisor in applying the principles of Kaizen, Standardized Work, and Lean Manufacturing on an on-going basis.  Participants consist of supervisors (defined as those who direct the work of others--team, cell, group leaders etc.) and employees expected to become supervisors.   

In this one-week class, participants learn a standardized and repeatable method of training using the Training Within Industry (TWI) Job Instruction (JI) method, which teaches supervisors how to quickly train employees to do a job correctly, safely, and conscientiously.  The method emphasizes preparing the worker to learn, giving a proper demonstration while identifying the Important Steps and Key Points, having the operator perform a trial run, and tapering off coaching while continuing to follow up.

Each student will be responsible for teaching another learner in the class a short demonstration/instruction which is part of the “learn by doing” methodology.  As part of this training, Missouri Enterprise assists clients in creating job breakdowns, as well as work with the supervisors/trainers as they begin the process.  At the end of this project, your company can expect to have a consistent, repeatable, professional training process.   

Missouri Enterprise teaches the skills of Job Instruction for classes of no more than ten participants in five two-hour sessions on five consecutive days.  If the client desires, this schedule can be compressed to four consecutive 2.5 hour sessions for each class.  If your company wants to train more than 10 people, an additional class can be added with both classes conducted on the same days.  Missouri Enterprise instructors possess the certification required from the TWI Institute to teach this Job Instruction method that was first created when millions of women had to be quickly trained to produce material needed for the men to fight and win World War II.

14. TWI-Job Relations

Training Within Industry (TWI) Job Relations Training (JR) teaches supervisors how to build positive employee relations, increase cooperation and motivation, and effectively resolve conflicts.  The course emphasizes that people must be treated as individuals to provide a foundation for developing and maintaining good relations to prevent problems from arising.  It also teaches supervisors to handle problems that do arise by gathering and weighing facts before taking action, and then checking results to evaluate whether the action helped production.

Missouri Enterprise teaches the skills of Job Relations for classes of no more than ten participants in five two-hour sessions on five consecutive days.  If the client desires, this schedule can be compressed to four consecutive 2.5 hour sessions for each class.  If your company wants to train more than 10 people, an additional class can be added with both classes conducted on the same days.  Missouri Enterprise instructors possess the certification required from the TWI Institute to teach this Job Relations method.  Participants consist of supervisors (defined as those who direct the work of others--team, cell, group leaders etc.) and employees expected to become supervisors. 

In the first session of each course, the trainer presents a real-world problem that everyone can easily relate to and shows the poor ways in which these problems are usually handled in the workplace.  The TWI “4-Step Method” is introduced to show how supervisors can achieve better results by handling such problems more effectively.  The first two sessions focus on learning the methods.  The remaining course time is devoted to participant presentation of actual and current problems that participants handle by applying the TWI 4-Step Method.  Unlike many other training programs, the TWI “learn by doing” methodology requires participants to put what they learned in class immediately to use in the workplace.

15. Communicating for Leadership Success (a DDI course)

Communicating for Leadership Success is a half day course for up to 15 supervisors/leaders. This class will enable learners to:

  • Enhance their performance as leaders who achieve results through others as they build stronger relationships with their teams and others.
  • Realize business benefits as well as benefits to themselves as leaders from anticipating and meeting the personal and practical needs of those with whom they interact.
  • Plan for interactions more successfully, in person and virtually, so that their efforts and those of their teams are increasingly focused, efficient, and impactful.
  • Enrich the feedback that they provide to others.

In an increasingly complex and fast-paced work environment, leaders often fail to see the impact their interactions with others have on their success as leaders, their job satisfaction, or the success of the business. Meeting ambitious deadlines and maintaining operational metrics can overshadow being aware of people’s “human” needs.  In Communicating for Leadership Success, participants learn when and how to use interpersonal skills that will enable them to prepare for, lead, and participate in a variety of crucial interactions with management, their peers, and their team members.

16. Blueprint Reading

This course provides general blueprint knowledge and training in a classroom environment and helps participants understand specific blueprint callouts and the basic use of measuring devices.  Any business involved in producing parts using defined drawings and specifications can benefit from this class.

Class size is suggested at approximately 12 attendees, with a hard limit of 15.  Training will consist of six sessions.  Each session will be approximately four hours in length.

It should be noted that training typically consists of three methods: lecture, demonstration videos, and hands-on application.  This ensures repetition and student application of material to maximize learning and internalization of material.  This format also provides increased opportunities to effectively reach multiple styles of learners.

Level I Training:

Below is a general course guideline of the blueprint reading class and may vary depending on class participation and topic focus of the client.

Day 1 – Introduction to Engineering Drawings and Pretest
Day 2 – Multiview Drawings, Examine shop floor drawings
Day 3 – Sectional Views, Dimensioning and Tolerancing Part I
Day 4 – Dimensioning and Tolerancing Part II, Examine shop floor drawings
Day 5 – Intro to GD&T (if requested), Part Feature Specifications, Examine shop floor drawings

17. Internal Auditor Training

The purpose of this training is to prove clients with a cadre of capable auditors to perform regularly scheduled internal quality management system audits.  At the conclusion of this three-day course, students will be able to:

  • Describe the responsibilities of an internal auditor and describe the role of the internal audit in the maintenance and improvement of quality management systems
  • Obtain familiarity with the documentary structure of the QMS.
  • Define the elements of an internal audit.
  • Establish the purpose and objectives of the audit, define the audit scope, and identify the documents to be reviewed and information to be obtained before the audit.
  • Produce an outline plan for auditing the conformance of that part(s) of the quality management system.
  • Participate in an audit plan, including opening and closing meetings
  • Prepare audit checklists appropriate for the scope, objective, and audit criteria for use in practical audit exercises.
  • Apply the audit checklist in an actual audit situation. This will require cooperation from the client organization.
  • Review audit results against audit criteria.
  • Write clear, actionable audit reports as needed.
  • Share and explain audit findings with auditees.

18. Foundations of Leadership

Having the skills to support, motivate, inspire and move people into action is essential for a person in a leadership position.  Foundations of Leadership reviews: what Leadership is, different leadership styles, team dynamics, addressing conflict, organizational culture differences between a Lean vs Traditional Management approaches, and providing feedback on performance evaluations and coaching for performance.  This is a full-day course covering the basic elements that make for successful leaders and supervisors.

19. Continuous Improvement Executive Overview

This is a four-hour overview for supervisors that provides a good general introduction of the principles, processes, and terms involved in creating and sustaining a continuous improvement culture.

20. Statistical Process Control Training

This training program look at the definition of process variation, as well as some of the common and specific causes.  Participants will learn how to understand the process, the causes of variation, how to analyze control charts and calculate capability indices.

21. DDI (an entry level-front line leadership training)

Frontline managers are the individuals who connect strategy to execution within an organization and are responsible for supervising the majority of the workforce. These leaders are the defining factor between success and failure of an organization. Consider the following statistics:

22. Your Leadership Journey (DDI)

This course arms a new or prospective leader with the knowledge and skills they need to confront the challenges they face early in their leader career. The course encourages the learner to think about the transitions that newer leaders face and how to handle those challenges. They are introduced to three leadership differentiators that are most important to building a positive reputation as well as contributing to the organization’s success.
